Morning on the 7th floor.

Tuesday morning, I arrive at my office on the Seventh Floor of Our Beloved Donor Law Building, grab my coffee mug (the one that doesn't tip over), and head over to the Lubar Faculty Library, where I put the mug in the coffee machine and hit the Large, Strong, and Start buttons. The machine grinds through its routine, and I wander about.

Hmmm.... the absence of doughnuts:

The absence of donuts.

Thinking of what might have been, I gaze out the window:

Brendan: We did a full renovation a few years ago, albeit without an individual donor of sufficient magnitude to have the building named after him. The renovation is very nice, especially, perhaps, the faculty library. We wanted to do it this way for a number of reasons, one of which is a desire to maintain the location on Bascom Hill, which is sublime.

We are grateful to the many alumni who contributed to the renovation effort. (Most of the faculty contributed too. We didn't Schumer.) But I call the building Our Beloved Donor Building, because I believe that one day, someone will make the kind of donation that will put his name on the building. I would like to see our law school have the kind of endowment that benefits the University of Michigan Law School.

The whole central part of the building was demolished and built into a completely different sort of place, including a very beautiful main library. The mural is of course preserved, and the reading room it's in is nicely restored.

All this talk of architecture is very nice but what about the empty donut box? Can you think of anything sadder? Can you?

Sniff.

I misread "I gaze out the window" as "I glaze out the window"...mmm...doughnuts.

Too bad you don't live in or near the home of the BEST doughnuts ever. Krispy Kreme. HOT! NOW! They are practically free here in North Carolina near the corporate offices.

Mmm. Nice view.

If I gaze out of my window, it is an inside one, so I see the carpet in the hall outside. If I step out on the hall, I can look right out the door, to where the smokers are all puffing away, then past the garbage can to the parking lot. Then behind that, I can see a little patch of desert strewn with litter, and then the freeway.

Somehow the empty doughnut box reminds me more of that view than your other picture does.

Ruth Anne:

The problem with Krispy Kreme is that with all their other problems lately, it isn't just their doughnuts that are real cheap. So is their stock.

Eli: Buy low. Sell high. Eat lots of doughnuts.

Pete, an empty donut box is only sad if you didn't get to eat your share of the donuts. Hey, wait, I didn't get ANY of those donuts! Sniff.

PS Pete, didn't you used to be a priest?

Wait . . . there were doughnuts in the faculty library this morning?

I can't believe that I missed them.

Icepick,

Hah! Yes, but only on TV.
