Dancing in fat suits.

Hilarious photo. And here's the article about the ballet "Groosland": "Such carryings-on are wildly incorrect, politically speaking, and there is indeed a disturbing undercurrent." I don't find this disturbing at all. (Or is the disturbing part that thy start off dressed like "working-class stereotypes from the south of France"?) I think it's quite cool! I'm a big fan of fat nudes, I should add. I've done a lot of life drawing classes -- as I've written about before -- and I was always happy when the model was fat.

Figure drawing could be fairly easy if you didn't have to draw the model's face. My teacher has us draw each other's faces as a warmup and I'm finding that noses are damned difficult to draw well.

Reposition yourself so the face isn't visible, or cut of the composition somewhere to exclude the face. But why are you trying to make it easy? And why does the teacher make you waste time on the face when it's easy to get people to pose for portraits, and much rarer to get a chance to draw from a nude models? Just ask your friends. Most will let you draw their face all you want.

I predict fat people are going to be BIG in 2007.

Oh, we're not drawing from models. I didn't phrase that well. It seems like it would be easier if, etc.

Right now we're doing gesture drawings, which is a problem if you're a left-brain person like me. :)

Anyone else reminded of Fantasia's Hippo Ballet?

??? Cause when she paints fat models, she uses up more paint and that makes Ann feel like she is doing an immense work of art?

Wordcheck was no lie "nrudr"

E. Buzz Miller: How about you Kristi?

Kristi Kristina: Well, I'm an artist and an entertainer...

E. Buzz Miller: Yeah, right...

Kristi Kristina: But I think she's very heavy.

E. Buzz Miller: Well, 'course back then that's the way they liked 'em. You know.

I've been laughing about this story all morning. Ballerinas strapping on fat suits. Now I know why it's killing me. I just remembered like five years ago, a San Francisco mother sued the SF Ballet Scool for discrimination because the School rejected her daughter for not having the right body type (she had baby fat). Link. The case went nowhere, but it produced all sorts of snappy editorials, with lines like "The barre shouldn't be lowered". Anyway, the irony...

I'm not sure if this will be discouraging or liberating, but face drawing isn't any harder than drawing other stuff, humans just notice the mistakes more when it's a face.

Maybe I'm very weird but the first time (only time?) I heard an artist explain that the reason you think you're good at drawing frogs (for example) and bad at people is just because you don't notice all the mistakes you made with the frog, Because you're not a frog, I felt like, "Hey, maybe I'm actually *better* at people than I thought I was."
