Just another Brooklyn sunset.

Just another Brooklyn sunset

Tonight. (It's better enlarged.) Later, there were fireworks out in the harbor again. Again, I have no idea why. March 2nd. Is there some March Groundhog Day? What? St. Patrick minus Ides?

Well, it's Texas Independence Day. But I doubt that New Yorkers ('New York City? Get a rope') would bother celebrating that.

There's lot's of ex-patriots in New York City.

Larry King (not the CNN one, the other one) wrote a number of entaining essays about Texans in NYC. Once a month getting together with friends and drinking Lone Star and listening to Willie, stuff like that.

And Kinky even used to live in NYC.

Didn't y'all take Texas History in 8th grade? Where are y'all from?

Hey, why not fireworks for Texas Independence Day? After all, they named the hockey team there after the Lone Star State's most famous law enforcement agency (well, sort of -- the founder of New York's NHL team was named Tex Rickard and the nickname the press chose for the team was a play on words using his first name).

The Ides are the 15th in March May July and October (MMJO). That's what screwed up Caesar. Normally it's the 13th.

As a natural-born NYC-ite, I'm gonna miss your pictures when you go back to Mad Wisc.

Thank you.

Also St David's Day just passed. Maybe some stray Welshmen in the city?

Scott,

Guilty as charged. With ancestors named Morgan, Llewyllyn, owens, Thomas - Welsh as they come.

Unfortunately I didn't have the fireworks to set off. I did get a leek today though.

Speaking of Kinky, the latest twist in the Texas primary is really intriguing. The number of delegates allotted in tomorrow's primary per Congressional district is based on the Democratic turnout (number of votes for the Democratic candidate) in the past two elections (the same way the GOP allocates delegates per state, but in the Democratic party it is done at least in Texas by congressional district.) This means the total number of Democratic votes in each district for John Kerry in 2004 and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mike Bell in 2006. In both elections Democrats knew they would lose anyway. In 2004 it didn't make much difference because there was no serious third party candidate. But in 2006 Friedman drew a lot of votes from younger Democrats (especially college students) as well as in areas where legalized marijuana would help the local economy. So the allocations of delegates on Tuesday is directly affected by Kinky's candidacy.
