"Inside the Anonymous Army of 'Hacktivist' Attackers."

The Wall Street Journal reports from Hoogezand-Sappemeer, Netherlands:
Last week, LulzSec [a splinter group of Anonymous] said it had knocked the Central Intelligence Agency's website offline for about an hour. The CIA said no internal or classified networks were affected.

A call to a phone number set up by the group, 614-LULZSEC, wasn't returned. One LulzSec follower called "tflow" responded to a Wall Street Journal reporter in an online chat room, saying: "Unfortunately the gnomes are too busy to pick up your clearly inferior call."

"For the past month and a bit, we've been causing mayhem and chaos throughout the Internet, attacking several targets," LulzSec said in a statement last week. "This is the Internet, where we screw each other over for a jolt of satisfaction."
The gnomes are too busy to pick up your clearly inferior call....

All in good fun.

Until they mess with someone who can (1) locate people and (2) kill them without thinking about it much, and not for lulz but with extreme prejudice.

Was it the Underpants Gnomes?

I'm looking forward to the day when anarchist hackers decide to go after the money system.

Obliterate all financial records!

Blow everything up and start all over again!

Isn't that what anarchists are supposed to do?

Be they ever so humble, there should be no place for gnomes....

Sounds like they got tired of raiding in WoW and started hacking.

LulzSec are the online version of the Vancouver rioters.

This is what happens when you subsidize young men so they do not work, aand they are not taught discipline, they have no purpose or mission in life.

Thug life in Chicago, LulzSec in the Netherlands, Hockey hooligans in Vancouver, Jihadi in Pakistan, Bōsōzoku in Japan.

They have a phone number?

Sounds like they're about 16. Their tone will change when they get caught. Mommy and Daddy will call the lawyers but it won't do them much good.

I wish people would stop calling them "hackers". We need a new word to more accurately describe them.

I think I read over at Ace's about a group that started hacking lulzec and posting their personal info online because they were tired of their attention whoring under the always lame pretense of "exposing security flaws".

As Pogo said - they'll be forced to quit when they actually cause some legitimate mayhem.

I believe the term is "script kiddiez".

I repeat my call for a fund called Hookers for Hackers. These guys[hackers are almost exclusively male] just need to get laid. The fund can be supported by Microsoft, Apple, etc. along w/ donations from individuals fed up w/ having slow computers.

Civilization will end when it is so complex that one individual loser can destroy it.

DOS: Instead of "hackers," I would propose "vandals."

I think I’ve seen that or a similar plot in any number of movies and TV shows except that the hackers are invariably portrayed as being the (reluctant) heroes and it’s usually a corporation that sends out the hired killers to take them out for exposing some underhanded or illegal deal.

Mess with Russia, boys and let's see what happens.

The leader of the cult was a British 19-year-old agoraphobic firebug with apparent sociopathic tendencies, supported by his on-the-dole single mom? Either it's way too easy to hack these days, or he's somebody's cat's paw. For all of our sakes, I hope it's the latter, because the former is just... full of doom.

Better yet, try it on Israel.

I don't think the business community will murder for this.

But the he CIA is real enough to accomplish it. Other nations may be 'very unhappy' with them too.

In accordance with numerous suggestions by the commenters, Spetsnaz, Mossad, the SAS, any SEAL Team, SF group, Ranger or RM squad would be more than sufficient to the task.

PS spinelli's Hookers idea also has merit, but it's nowhere near the fun of watching the little darlings get theirs.

Sounds like cause enough for a Predator drone strike on the Netherlands. That sort of attack doesn't constitute "war" in the President's mind. Let's see if the Dutch agree.

How’s about we meet in the middle and send in La Femme Nikita?

I suspect getting them laid would cause their heads to explode just by itself. No need for any added effort or expense!

WV: catic, which sounds like some kind of feline-worshipping religion.

Wait a minute...didn't they steal that line from Sen. Mary Landrieu's voicemail?
