Why not O'Malley?

For President.
"I have a great deal of respect for Hillary Clinton... But for my own part, I have a responsibility to prepare and to address the things that I feel a responsibility to address. . . . To squander this important period of preparation because of horse-race concerns and handicapping concerns is just not a very productive use of energy. . . . Right now, I’m going to keep doing what I’m doing — the thought work and the preparation work."
ADDED: "Clinton's biggest vulnerability in 2008 was the aura of inevitability... That could be compounded in 2016 — particularly if there's no serious primary opponent — and so a slow and deliberate ramp up could serve her well."

He's a lightweight. So is Cuomo.

All he has done is raise taxes, run off the wealthy and businesses and utterly fail implementing Obamacare.

Oh, he did gay marriage and wants to jack up the minimum wage....

In a debate during the 2010 campaign, O'Malley referred to undocumented immigrants as "new Americans",

It's Maryland. They rely on DC for their wealth. We know they didn't build that.

Sorry, Martin. The current President has already reduced America to a shell of its former self. Wait. I take that back. Someone's already done the heavy lifting. You can come right in and take credit for it. It worked for you in Maryland, it just might work in the country.

He has more accomplishments than Hillary.

1) Set up state run exchange for health care.
2) ???
3) Coming soon
4) Maybe POTUS in 2016

Because he's a Gun Grabber.

I could run a squirrel against him and win.

In a normal, non-Hillary world, O'Malley would be considered a strong contender for the Democratic nomination. He hits all the liberal soft spots, except crime (though he is anti-death penalty) and that's one for which they give a pass to their nominees (remember when Clinton flew back to Arkansas to watch the execution of a severely retarded man who was so far gone that he actually saved a part of his last meal "for later"?). Mayor of a large, diverse city for 8 years, then a Governor for 8 more, with a long list of liberal accomplishments. Sure, he wouldn't appeal much to moderates in the general, but the Democrats can usually count on Republicans to sabotage themselves into needing the electoral college's version of an inside straight to win anyway.

But all that gets tossed aside as an irrelevancy, because the Democrats have decided that liberal principles be damned at the altar of their wonderful new dynasty, the Clintons. They claim they want another "first"--first female president this time--regardless of the fact that there are many other female Democrats with more accomplishments than Hillary, better charisma than Hillary, and without the long history of helping to destroy any woman that gets in the way of her sex predator of a husband. Make no mistake--this is nothing more than the work of dynasti-philes, and once humiliated in 2008 by Obama, they will be damn sure to slash and burn any other Democrat with the gall to think he or she should become president instead.

When this is all over, Martin O'Malley will look like a greasy spot on the side of the highway. I pity the fool. He just can't play as dirty as a Clinton.

From the article:

With less than a year left in office, O’Malley is without a clear destination. Thus far, his political career has moved swiftly — from Baltimore council member, to mayor, to Maryland governor — but now it’s uncertain what his next job will be. If it could be the presidency, he said, there’s no time to waste.

Now there's a record of high accomplishment. He's in the running for a Spiro Agnew award for sure.

"I'm not qualified for anything else, so I'm going to run for president."

Yeah, that's a campaign slogan.

What were his results as mayor of Baltimore, pray tell (other than getting elected governor?)

ask him about the jail.

Where the guards work for their prisoner bosses

He's running for vice president. And why not? There hasn't been a Maryland governor as VP since Spiro Agnew.

As for Baltimore, during his tenure as mayor the crime rate dropped quite a bit--whether that's due to anything he did or just part of a national trend is up for debate, but he'll certainly take credit for it (and point to how crime has been getting worse in Baltimore over the past few years).

As for his governorship, he'll take credit for tax increases (popular among "anti-inequality" types that will flood Democratic primaries), increased jobs (though this has more to do with federal government spending, but he'll take credit for that too), additional gun restrictions, and the gay marriage bill. All of that should be red meat for the liberal grass roots.

Website rollout disaster will be easy to derail him. Wapo has already run stories that the techies were telling everyone who would listen that the website was going to fail miserably. Its fairly easy to connect those dots

Brando said...

Sam L--my point exactly!

Remember the sort of people that will be voting in Democratic primaries and caucuses. Many of the things that would shame you are worn as badges of honor in such circles.

Good for him, a sheep thrown to the wolves but useful for engaging Hillary to hone her skill going into the general election. VP run sounds about right.

Why not O'Malley? Because he's a Keynesian dinosaur.

YoungHegelian said...

We here in MD have a generation of duds as our political class. Maybe that's what happens when a state becomes essentially a one-party state in any case. O'Malley is just such a dud.

One of the more interesting state officials is the current Comptroller, Peter Franchot. Franchot is that rare bird, a former Takoma Park liberal who somehow had a "Road to Damascus" experience whereby he decided that the taxpayers' money was not the cure for all of mankind's ills. Rumors that his Volvo was driven off the road by a blinding light as he drove to Annapolis on Rt. 50 are probably apocryphal.

Rumpletweezer said...

The failure of the Maryland Obamacare website won't derail him. He turned responsibility for that over to his Lt Gov. It might, however, derail the Lt Gov's plan to become Gov...probably not, though.

What, exactly, has Hillary done to deserve anyone's respect? Seriously!

During O'Malley's governorship:

Sales tax increased by 20%. In addition, he added in several new categories of transactions that would be subject to it.
Sales tax on alcohol increased 80%.
Tolls at all bridges and tunnels increased by 120%-400% depending on the bridge/tunnel.
Oversaw disaster of a website for Obamacare, despite heartily and quickly embracing it as policy.
Allowed in-state tuition for illegal immigrants.
Signed strict gun-control law that has lead to at least one major gun manufacturer (Baretta) leaving the state.

Please run for President, Martin. Although I agree that this is his bid to really end up in the VP spot. However, now that Hilary is an East Coast gal, I don't think she'd go for him as a running mate.

O'Malley is a sexy, sexy guy who had his own band for years, even as mayor. And that may sink him. He put the kibosh on the rumors of a sex affair during his run for governor because the rumor could be traced back to the Republican. In very blue Maryland, that was enough. I'd heard the tale over a year earlier from someone who worked for him at City Hall, so I tend to believe it, and suspect the dirt could still be dug up. Would it matter? That's for everybody to decide.

YoungHegelian said...

#richlb,

And never, ever, in the middle of raising all those taxes did he ever discuss cutting ANYTHING from a government budget.

Maryland keeps a balanced budget, and they do it the honest liberal way: they just keep on raising taxes to pay for it!

I'm not sure when the electorate will start to yell "Uncle", but we're not there yet, by any stretch. But, it'll happened, and when it does it'll be ugly.

As much as he's done, including breaking baseball's color barrier, I think Walter O'Malley for President would be a terrible idea. Plus, I don't even think he's alive.

Edwards should have a sex change and run for POTUS. America needs to "prove" its tolerance by electing an incompetent tranny. We already have blacks and women covered.
