"God instructed me to sell them, they are his properties and I will carry out his instructions."

Said Abubakar Shekau, leader of the group that has kidnapped 230 girls from a school in Nigeria.

The name of the group is Boko Haram, which means "Western education is forbidden."

Sounds like it's time for another round of Christian bashing and radical Islamist defense.

I wonder which of our regular lefty posters will be first up?

We could also set up a pool on the over/under on the number of posts by our resident lefties which equate the battle over "free birth control/War on Women!" vs actual war on women.

I'm guessing Crack for the first challenge and then 17 for the over/under.

How in the world did that Boko Harem clown acquire an armored personnel carrier? It looks like a Russian design, but others may known better. If it is operational, then I'm sure it is expensive to operate. Who is funding this clown?

President Goodluck Jonathan, and his first lady Patience Jonathan? They sound like stage names selected by their agent.

The great Robert Spencer has it on point,

"Abubakar Shekau gleefully taunts the mothers of the girls he abducted, knowing that what he has done in abducting them has clear Qur’anic sanction: the Qur’an allows a man to have sex with the “captives of the right hand” (4:3), which has traditionally been understood as slave girls. The large number of girls abducted in this case has finally brought some international attention to the Nigerian jihad, but untold numbers of girls have suffered the same fate as these girls throughout Islamic history and in the present day."

The shocking thing isn't that some bozo in Nigeria thinks it is OK to sell girls. It is that there are likely people willing to buy them.

"God instructed me to sell them, they are his properties and I will carry out his instructions,"

If they are the property of God then Abubakar Shekau is only the agent of God and should therefore receive only a commission. I will leave it as an exercise for the imagination as to how he will get the receipts from the sale up to God.

For that matter: If they are the property of God, then where they not God's property before Abubakar Shekau took them? In effect, he stole the girls from God.

Abubakar Shekau is so going to hell.

It is such a strange idea, the notion that God "instructed me to sell them ..." I don't have any interest (or any ability) to parse out whether this is or is not a reasonable interpretation of some Koranic command, or if so, how Islamic scholars reconcile such barbarity with a conception of the divine. But it does highlight something I've often thought about - the line between faith and madness.

To think about it in a less provocative context, imagine the story of Abraham and Isaac on the mountain, with the knife poised above the bound child in preparation for the divinely demanded sacrifice, playing out today. (A contemporary version of that happens every few years in the Bronx, where a parent claims to have heard 'voices' driecting them to do something awful. The NYPost dutifully reports on such things.)

Abraham's story is accepted as a bibilical demonstration of a true believer's obedience to God, even to the point of offering one's most precious possession. In making the recent film about Noah, the film makers try to give a more modern take on the same idea -- where Noah feels himself divinely ordered to kill his two gran-daughters at birth but then cannot carry out the command. The film's narrative suggests that God's real command, misunderstood by Noah, was to give to Noah the duty of choosing whether to exterminate the human race. In its way, that approach seeks to rescue the biblical story, and the conception of God embedded in it, from the homicidal madness that it would otherwise display.

Those are tougher stories to reconcile with a concept of the divine than, say, the Jesus saying telling the young man who seeks perfection to "give what you have to the poor and come follow me." For most people, that's a hard saying to accept and very few follow it. But I don't think that anyone would say that it was a display of clinical madness to do so. Not so with the Abraham/Isaac story or the cruelty and inhumanity on display in this article (assuming for present purposes that the Boko Haram group is treated as sincerely religious in motivation).

Selling young kids into marriage doesn't seem to be worth an interdiction. It's not like they are illegally selling oil or something valuable like that.

We all know what this means. We have to be extra vigilant now to protect the Muslims within our population as haters will lash out at them and make them fear for their innocent lives.

It's just terrible, how awful Christians can be when provoked.

looks small, even from the front. bout the size of those other SUV's. The double armored windshield looks Warsaw Pact. My guess is that it is a BRDM variant.

Bandmeeting,

Not just shocking that there will be willing sellers and buyers but who those sellers and buyers are.

Here we have a case of blacks capturing and selling other blacks into slavery to other blacks.

It's enough to make Crack's head explode. Everybody knows that only whited buy and sell black slaves.

Right?

Everybody does know that, don't they?

In all seriousness this is a heartbreaking story. As a parent and grandparent, I think the idea of my kids/grandkids being sold into slavery would be harder to take than knowing they had been killed.

My prayers are with the girls.

Drago, I realize that you mean this to be sarcastic, but unfortunately there is a great deal of truth to your accusation against the lefties. Lefties love Islam and with cooperation from some dhimmis on the right they do all they can to protect Islam. Last week Paul Weston, the chairman of a new political party in the United Kingdom called Liberty GB was arrested for quoting a statement by Winston Churchill which is critical of Islam.

In some ways this is just as reprehensible as water boarding. If the girls are recovered I hope steps are taken to make sure that they don't become Islamophobic. That would compound the tragedy.......I read the story. The wife of the Nigerian president sounds truly awful. Michelle should take her off the Xmas card list.

That's what happens every time on the Volokh Conspiracy, in every post even peripherally or tangentially related to Muslim atrocities, jihad, or sharia. I've been bringing that up in every relevant post since 2007, and it drives the left nuts to be called out on it.

For some strange reason, they proclaim that Christianity, particularly Catholicism, is the source of all evil in the world, while ardently defending the religion that holds everything the left believes in abhorrent, i.e., homosexuality, women's rights, Western culture and music, science, et al.

Although for some inexplicable reason, now that they've partnered with the WaPo, and soon to be firewalled, the comment section has taken on a much more moderate tone. To my surprise, a lot of new conservative commenters/voters have shown up, and the aggressive, belligerent leftists have subsided considerably.

Hi Richard Dolan,

It's not such a "strange idea," if you go by Exodus 21 (and others), where a man-slave can leave his slavery, but he can't take his wife and children with him. The man-slave must choose between slavery and his family. The Old Testament is often just as absurd as the Koran.

Most Christians have just come more to their senses.

Not to worry, this is all overblown. I am assured by many well-educated leftists that Islam is a religion of peace, and that women are far worse off in the evil, sexist west than they are in enlightened cultures like mountain guerrilla camps.

Under Sharia law you can sell infidels into slavery. It is terrible but the man is not insane - he's just a Moslem believer. Furthermore, if England really accepts Sharia as it says it will do then these girls could be sold into slavery in London.

The debate is whether there are universal values and anyone to uphold them. Will Obama do anything? No, he won't be able to think of anything effective to do; he'll whine about public opinion being opposed to action but the real problem is that Obama is only thinking about the next party or vacation to which he's going.

Averroes (Ibn Rushd) was, in the 12th century, denounced by orthodox Muslims, convicted of heresy, exiled to a Jewish town, and had his books burned, on the grounds that his Aristotelian-based rational philosophy was dangerous to Islam.

On the other hand, Christian and Jewish scholars like Thomas Aquinas and Moses Maimonides took Averroes to heart, and built on his writings, even building them into Catholic and Jewish theology.

Many of the West see this as the short-sightedness of the Muslim religious authorities, who had the opportunity to learn from Aristotle via Averroes, and chose not to, ceding the intellectual leadership of the world to the West.

Boko Haram sees this as the short-sightedness of the of the Jewish and Christian religious authorities, who failed to reject the infection of rationalism that became full-blown secularism, and saw the power of their religions destroyed by it.

If you want a western variant of Boko Haram then look no further then the grooming gangs in the UK (with as their very own quisling guest stars the social services, the police, the media and in fact the UK government, especially labour when it was in power).

Well, the UN is grilling the CC, that will help things (yes, sarcasm).

Your insinuation that I am supporting the kidnappers is nonsensical. Please find the nearest busy road and lay down in the middle of it.

I can see it is very very important to madisionfella that we not discuss the black african radical islamists kidnapping, raping and selling into sex slavery black african Christian girls whose "crimes" are being Christian and being educated.

This is typical of leftists. They simply cannot bring themselves to unequivocally condemn islamists.
