Trump "reached his nadir under interrogation from Megyn Kelly, his nemesis from that first debate."

"The subject was fraud charges against Trump University, and every time he tried to portray them as baseless and the school and its students as the happiest place this side of Disneyland, Kelly pushed back. Confronted him with contrary evidence. Corrected his selective, self-serving version. Her victory was clear when Trump pivoted from defending himself to pummeling Rubio, saying that if fraud was the topic, Rubio’s poor record of attendance in the Senate should be examined. 'He scammed the people of Florida,' Trump said. 'He defrauded the people of Florida.'"

Writes Frank Bruni, aptly, in the NYT in "Five Big Questions After a Vulgar Republican Debate."

I say aptly, because a poor attendance record may be bad but it's not fraud (unless you have a fussy depends-on-what-the-meaning-of-fraud-is workaround), and so it was the kind of desperate argument you'd expect to hear from a child. Little Marco's bad too!

Trump U is a valid issue although it seems to be about the level of Fred Thompson selling reverse mortgages.

What I have read about seems to be an indicator of how stupid people can be even though they have money.

The father of a college room mate of mine was a real estate developer in Los Angeles in the 40s and 50s. It used to enrage him when the people who bought his real estate, and who seemed suckers to him, made a lot of money and asked for more investment advice.

Every Trump media exchange/interview has become like a legal deposition wherein the attorney-like host asks essentially the same question that was asked before. The two answers and transcripts are then compared like redlined documents. Discrepancies are highlighted and pounced on and then "litigated" in the court of opinion. I think Megyn Kelly pioneered this method, having legal training. BTW, how does she even keep her eyes open?

I want to point out to the Althouse readership what a bullshitter AReasonableMan is.

That quote he supplied, without a link, is from a Puffington Host article. The gist of the article is that old Obama-era complaint that for-profit universities need to be shut down. It's been one of the left-wing shibboleths in education for years.

And that isn't the issue with Trump University. Trump University, very much unlike anything that Rubio and Romney have ever been associated with, was never certified or chartered by New York as a "university" at all. And Trump University is in a class by itself, for lawlessness under New York law, for disputes between Donald J. Trump and the operators of the school, and for fraud claims by students.

The for-profit university model is actually a very interesting subject for true conservatives. Trump University is just the worst and most embarrassing example that there is, for unlawful excesses in the field.

And this of course is how the Trump model operates: Trump takes it on the chin for something stupid, insulting and hurtful to innocent people, and the response is a personal attack on the messengers. Shamelessness is the core Trump message.

I am listening to Trump's personal appearances in Detroit this morning. Utterly shameless and unhinged. Promising Detroit manufacturing workers that they will have so many job offers when he is president, they won't know what to do.

So if he wins the suit, what happens then? Trump will abe able to get testimonials from a lot of people who said the courses helped them.

A smart candidate might tie Trump U to the larger problem. But they don't want to address the larger problem.

From what I've read about Trump U, people taking the courses can't get student loans to pay for them. So at least the taxpayers won't be on the hook.

The Washington Post held Kaplan University while it scammed students but that was OK because The Post is run by Democrats and its ownership has changed because it was going bankrupt. But - nothing like Trump because Democratic.

Actually this morning after reading several Althouse posts I realized that Cruz and Rubio might be found ineligible before August while Hillary might be indited. Then if they found Sander's party card and the GOPe took away Trump's party card with relentless attacks we'd have no candidate for either party on the ballot except Kasich. Well that would be OK with me. But probably there would be organized write-ins and Trump and Hillary would be in the courts over Hillary's cheating in the inner cities for four years. Both would appoint Supreme Court Justices who would resolve the issue for the person who appointed them - or else for Kasich. It would turn into a Shia-Sunni division or two new parties. Kasich would head the third party - GOPe. The White House would be divided like Czechoslovakia and Hillary's section would be subdivided into HillsHell/BillsParty. Life would go on in America - better than before without the veiled kingship. It's all good.

It was a variant of Romney's "staple a green card to every diploma" cluelessness. It isn't just IT body-shops vending the minimally-skilled. (Though it would be great if they were shut down and shipped out. Fat chance.) Universities are huge abusers of this system, which is also damaging opportunities for citizens, short- and long-term. Yup. My alma mater made the LA Times this morning.

With a price tag of $51,442 for tuition and an additional $841 in fees, USC is sure to be in the running for the unofficial title of most expensive place in the country to get a college degree. According to U.S. News & World Report, Vassar College in New York won that honor for the current school year by charging $51,300 in tuition and fees. Even Harvard, that paragon of academic excellence, charges undergraduates a mere $45,278 in tuition and fees.

I went to SC in the late 50s and tuition ran on a per unit basis at $17. That totaled $272 a semester.

For the last couple years the NYT has been playing whack-a-mole with Republican presidential candidates, bopping each one as soon as he or she seems to be getting a bit of traction with the public. The whole paper -- news pages as well as editorials and op-eds -- is so totally in the tank for HIllary that every bit of news is refracted as if through a lens in a fun-house mirror. It's getting a little old.

Chuck said...

Because, Fabi, the traditional Ivy League, Public Ivy and Big State University system has become so imbued with left-wing values, and serves as such an institutional base for left-wing activism.

University "climate change" projects.

University "environmental law" clinics.

University "civil rights" initiatives and symposia.

Both Michigan State University and my (and Althouse's) alma mater the University of Michigan are involving themselves on several fronts in the Flint Water Crisis. A Wayne State University Law School faculty member is getting involved in litigation.

I've several times pointed to Justice Scalia's annoyed, persistent footnoting of the fact that the American Association of Law Schools (to which every law school desiring any status at all must join) made it a rule that if a firm was not welcoming to homosexuals, they could not come on to campus to interview. (It was on that basis that the military was barred from interviewing prospective JAGs; until congress passed a law on military recruitment on campus.)

To say nothing of the financial security base that university life provides to support grassroots activist leadership in the form of faculty members who can devote themselves to causes while they teach one course a year on the side.

Et cetera, et cetera.

An enterprise which competes with that institutional model holds considerable interest for conservatives. And we've seen the vituperation with which Obama Administration operatives have gone after for-profit institutions of higher ed.

Less than six months ago, the issue boiled up this way in a WSJ editorial:

http://www.wsj.com/articles/obamas-for-profit-stealth-attack-1445468149

At the same time; I am not a graduate of a for-profit. And I don't teach at one, nor do I have any interest in one. (I had some professional experience with course design at one; it was more than ten years ago.) I'm no advocate for the enterprise. And I am obviously a harsh critic of what I know about Trump University, to the extent that it can even be called a "for-profit university." Calling Trump University a "for profit" college that merits discussion within that general issue, is sort of like discussing John Dillinger as part of a discussion of banking regulation.

Trump University was never certified or chartered as a university, and never even tried to get that status as far as I know. Truck driving schools were a lot more regulated and certified than Trump University.

And again, that is why AReasonableMan's knee-jerk Trumpist reaction to lash out at Rubio and Romney for supposed connections with for-profit schools is so mendacious.

Title IX is another complicated subject. In 1976, when former Michigan football player Gerry Ford was in the White House, Michigan Senator Bob Griffin brought Bo Schembechler, Darrell Royal (Texas) and Barry Switzter (Oklahoma) to Washington to testify against a big expansion of Title IX. The NCAA used Michigan Athletic Director Don Canham to lobby his very good friend the President, to kill the legislation.

The football guys lost, to Republican moderates who were seeking to please women voters. And ever since, we see more and more how football (and now basketball) revenues are used to fund other nonrevenue sports. The football players are being used, not for anybody's "profit" as the left-wing activists like to argue; rather, they are being used to produce revenue, to support an ever-expanding enterprise of otherwise unsupportable women's athletics.

In 2010, Trump University got a D- rating. In 2011 it got an A rating. Right now it doesn't have a rating.

According to your link, the proof that Trumps 2011 A rating is a lie, is that it doesn't currently have a rating on BBB.

And yet, wouldn't that make the D rating also a lie?

Seems pretty clear to me that Megyn Kelly pulled a Candy Crowley on Trump last night.

So Little Baby Satan wanted to run for President of the United States. He decided the best way to do this is to run as a Democrat. “Okay,” said Little Baby Satan, “I want to run as a Democrat.” But the Democrats said no way. “We already have two angry old white people. We don’t want any more!”

Little Baby Satan was hurt. “I’m a Democrat! What do you mean, you’ve got too many angry old white people? You can never have too many angry old white people! Angry old white people are the best!” But Bernie started jumping up and down. “You’re a billionaire! You’re a billionaire!” And Hillary started jumping up and down. “You’re a man! You’re a man!”

So Little Baby Satan was pacing back and forth in hell, really upset that he could not run for President of the United States. And then he had an epiphany. “Wait a minute! I could run as a Republican!”

Now, the Republican party is a Grand Old Party. And they had decided to run two nice young Hispanic men for the White House. They were groomed and clean cut. And everybody was happy and whistling.

And then Little Baby Satan showed up.

“Oh no!” cried the Republicans. “It’s Little Baby Satan! He’s ruining our party!”

But many Republicans liked the angry old white guy. He was different. He was unique. He was real. “I’m an angry old white guy!” said Little Baby Satan. “And I’m a billionaire! And I am superior to everybody up here. Marco should cut my grass. Ted should clean my swimming pool. I am superior and they need to bow down before me.”

Marco and Ted did not agree that they should bow down before Little Baby Satan. Marco began making fun of Little Baby Satan. He began to mock Little Baby Satan. And Little Baby Satan got redder, and redder, and redder.

Many of the fans of Little Baby Satan started to notice that he did not have white skin anymore. “What is going on with Little Baby Satan? He’s turning red right before our eyes.”

“This is ridiculous!” cried Little Baby Satan. “I am not an Indian! I am an angry old white man! How can you think I’m an Indian!” And he got redder and redder and redder. Boy he was mad.

But the people liked him anyway. “We do not like all this racial politics stuff. We want to vote for an angry old white man!” So they did.

Meanwhile, Marco and Ted still refuse to bow down before Little Baby Satan. “I am so rich and powerful!” cried Little Baby Satan. “Bow down before me!” And he was jumping up and down and cursing. And his face started to look like a tanning bed accident. “What is wrong with your face?” asked Marco.

“Nothing!” screamed Little Baby Satan. “I’m an angry old white man, that’s all!” And he jumped up and down and all around.

And then one day, two little horns popped up out of his head.

“Vote for me!” yelled Little Baby Satan. “Vote for me or I will sue you for everything you have! Bow down before me. I am Little Baby Satan.” But people weren’t really listening anymore. “What’s going on there on the top of your head?” asked Ted.

“Nothing!” yelled Little Baby Satan. “Go back to Mexico!”

“Cuba,” said Ted, in Spanish. “Coo-ba.”

And Little Baby Satan got madder and madder. "I'm angry and old and white! Vote for me!" And he decided to go to a plastic surgeon to get rid of his horns, and cut off his tail.

But he still had to go on the bottom of the ticket anyway.

The end.

As for anybody who wants to go the "fairness" route, I'll let them pick and choose from any of about 25 articles in the last 5 days about the Trump University litigation. There is just one thing about all of them that stands out. In every case, the one person who is the most injudicious, the most reckless and the least reliable -- and I include Donald J. Trump, Megyn Kelly, Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, the attorneys for the parties, and everyone in print media doing fact checks -- the one person who is the standout "spinner" of the story is Trump himself.

My what a sanctimonious crux you've become.

Okay, I am demonizing Donald Trump. And you say, "That's wrong! That's wrong! He's not a demon, he's a man!"

Of course he's a man. I'm not saying he can't atone, or be better, or improve. He has a lot of good qualities, Donald Trump. Specifically I like his humor. It's his saving grace.

Also he forgives people. Like when his ex-wife accused him of rape? He shrugged it off. That impressed me. I wouldn't shrug that off! But he forgave her.

So there's a lot of goodness in Donald Trump. But his cynicism and his anger and his feeling of superiority, he needs to fix that. I have it too. What I did to him, he does to other people, all the time. Marco Rubio did it to him, too.

Maybe I should pray to God for Donald Trump to have his Damascus moment, where he is blinded and meets some real power.

Like a Saul -> Paul moment, perhaps you'll have a Donald -> Ronald moment?

@Saint Croix: I'm not sure about your certainty of Trump's redemptive status.

As for "sanctimonious" -- that was response to your comment in that (other) thread.

we're on that thread, I think!

Who wants to bet that Kelly would treat Hillary the same way she treats Trump? I might be wrong but I just don't get the sense she would. Imagine Kelly asking Hillary "Mrs. Clinton as President which department or agency would you be comfortable being run from the secretary's or director's personal email server?" I just don't see it happening.

I'm not either!

When he told me he was a pro-lifer now, and why, I swear I believe him.

I've been burned by liars before on this. It's important to me.

A lot of pro-lifers used to be pro-choice. I get that. I was like that.

The problem I run into is that he is so glib and dismissive of his words in other contexts. I have trouble trusting him in this context. But I watched one of the clips where he talked about how he changed into a pro-lifer, and I swear it seems to me he is telling the truth.

he's an excellent salesman, isn't he?

Baby Satan/Baby Genius

And it's so weird that the old guy in the race is the childish one, while the two candidates who are younger than me are so serious and sincere. Marco Rubio is 44. Ted Cruz is 45.
