What made me say "Oh! Interesting" in this new Trump ad.

"'Two Americas: Economy' is a 30-second spot that will run in Ohio, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Florida, New Hampshire, Iowa, Nevada, Virginia and Colorado," says Politico pointing at this new Trump ad:

Did you catch what struck me? Let me clip it for you:

I'm thinking about Colin Kaepernick and the sudden intrusion of an old simmering issue: Why should black people love America?

For a short period of time, back in 2012, pro quarterbacks who were a genuine threat to break a big run did well in the league. Then the pro defenses adjusted. Russell Wilson figured it out; Kaepernick and Robert Griffin III didn't. Griffin got his wake-up call but Kaepernick hasn't heard that call yet and according to ESPN gives him a quarterback rating of 47.1. If I were the 49ers GM I'd talk to the coaches about cutting him, depending on how much of his salary is guaranteed.

Why should black people love America?

It would be perverse to not love Santa Claus.

Blacks have been coasting on slavery in the Old South (conveniently forgetting that the North and West fought a bloody war to end it) for far too long. The steam is running out on that engine quickly, which is why BLM was invented — to extort more freebies and set-asides from the rest of us who struggle to pay the taxes that the Democrats use to buy Black voter's loyalty.

Temujin said...

For the promise of America. The same reason people have been streaming here from all ends of the earth for over 200 years. The founders knew we were flawed at the start, full of our own evils and faults (slavery), but setting up a template hoping that future generations, if given the chance to be free, could get it right. Sorry to say, we have not gotten it yet.

Ours was the promise of a government based on individual rights- not collective rights. And it was based on a government that was LIMITED in its power and oversight. We lost that. We're now a nation of collectivists. We've given our documented powers as individuals back to the government in exchange for cheap promises. Those promises turn out to be not so, but we don't get those individual rights back once given up.

The promise of America was that individuals can, in a free society, with a free market, make their way as best as they can based on their efforts, abilities, creativity, and production. It worked for awhile. And it still can....or could. There are millions from all over the world who have made their way here. We have created more wealth and freed more people than any other nation in history. Yet, our own backyards are a disgrace.

The promise is still there. Its up to us to learn it, do it, keep it. Government is not going to take care of us. We have to- all of us. Trump is a flawed candidate in so many ways. But Hillary is the worst sort of collectivist/Oligarch. She is accountable to no one, and has the goal only of increasing her own personal wealth and power, and that of her family and friends- even at the risk of the security of this nation. Say what you will, but this is her history. The promise of America is greater than that. Some people, of all colors, have found it.

Black people? I dunno. Black Americans? Because it's their country and their home.

People can love and admire countries other than their own, and some want to ditch their native lands and move somewhere else for a variety of reasons. For another variety of reasons, people can have a very problematic relation with their native land. But home is home, to which most people feel a deep attachment that goes far deeper than ideology, or the existence of injustice or material misfortune. Especially people whose roots go back centuries, as is the case for most American blacks. I bet even Reverend God Damn America loves America in that normal human way.

It is called tough love. You can love your brother, the heroin addict, and at the same time hate him for what he is doing to himself and everyone around him. IF if you want to save him from destruction you have to use tough love. Force him to face his addictions, acknowledge his own self destruction and even force him, kicking and screaming the whole way, into rehab. Rehab and reconstruction of his life.

If you don't intervene your brother is doomed and not only that.....he will take the whole family into the abyss with him.

Tough love.

And yes, of course, Unknown, many do. Most of the black people I know, I met because they signed up to defend America.

As a young man I was incensed reading Derrick Z. As I get older I can (through gritted teeth) understand this position a lot better, but I have all the more admiration for those black Americans who have put their lives on the line for this country.

Real American at 10:59 offers, "For the same reasons everyone else should." I was just thinking that Victor Henry's silent musing, in the closing pages of The Winds of War, applies as much to those black Americans as to me:

"Because with all its rotten spots, the United States of America was not only his homeland but the hope of the world."

It's something I've pondered many times. Why should people love a nation that was founded on the basis that all men are created equal and endowed with the natural rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness and yet permitted their ancestors who were brought here in chains none of that? Why should they love a nation that permitted Jim Crow for decades on end? Why should they love a nation where they were at best second class citizens for a very long time? I've been acquainted with African-Americans who were very patriotic, but I never asked them why. Perhaps I should have. Perhaps we should ask them now. It would make a very interesting PBS special, I think.

They don't have to. It's not a requirement. What is a requirement (and that applies to all) is that they obey the laws and don't aid and abet the enemies of the US or commit treason which is why all decent Americans should not vote for any Democrat this election be it from President to Governor to Mayor and from Congress to State Legislature and City and County councilmen. You don't even need to get into all that, because the answer is much simpler. If anyone (regardless of race) does not think this is the best country for them, they're free to leave. It doesn't even have to be because they don't love this country--you can love this country and still want to live somewhere else (e.g., climate, family, cost of living, a job opportunity) but if you think it's completely unloveable, then it makes little sense to stay here. This country goes through pains to determine who can come in--but there's really nothing stopping you (unless you're a fugitive) from going.

We don't need to justify all the reasons this country is good for blacks, whites, etc.--their decision to stay says it all.

Jupiter said...

"Did Sanders also say he wanted to feed conservatives into the woodchipper?" Sanders has a lot more influence than a bunch of tongue-in-cheek commenters on a blog, and he just founded an organization called "Our Revolution". Why is always revolution with lefties? Or does it just mean "personal struggle"? A leftist jihad of sorts.

Black people in America probably think my taxes are too high, and the "value" in return sucks.

I don't think it's about the color of your skin, but the life you are leading.

If you are caught in a terrible neighborhood with a terrible education and danger everywhere and that is your America, I wouldn't see a lot to love in that, no.

The sad thing is, none of that has to be that way. *America* isn't making that neighborhood bad or dangerous.

We've seen, in two different cities, Trump supporters mobbed while police were ordered by higher ups to not interfere.

That is markedly worse than words.
