"I'm going to skin you alive. Come here if you've got the balls... I look forward to shooting you seven times when I get my hands on you."

Said to the judge by a man on trial for threatening to kill a judge. But this wasn't just a ridiculous impulsive outburst. Basque separatist Ignacio Javier Bilbao Goikoetxea means to threaten violence "until I die or I'm killed."

That'll cost him some tv time once back in the slammer! I bet his therapy is not going well either.

I wonder if he realizes that that approach might be slightly non-conducive to Basque independence?

Too many people basque in the limelight by acting violently, in fact the media panders to it. Sigivald is right, there are better ways.

Ignacio is darn lucky the Judge didn't hand him his head in basquet.

Ignacio Alphabet Soup Goikoetxea has let righteousness take over him and turn him into nothing but a seething mass of anger. I don't think this fight is any longer about independence for him. It's about sating his anger.

So, hypothetically, if they ever do get independence, can a guy like this put the guns down? Just what kind of damage will this fellow and others just like him do to that hypothetical nascent society? Or the neighboring ones? I don't know if he could ever stop fighting, even if he got everything he believes his people wants.

I have one word that describes the Basque disease:

Sadly, this guy will probably be released a few years into his 45-year sentence because the Spanish will not take him at his word. His death threat is not a threat it is a promise. No amount of rehabilitation or group therapy or anger management will stop him. He most likely will be paroled (though it doesn't look like he can toe the line so maybe he'll do a full 45) in a few years and go and kill a judge.

I'm being serious here.
Why is Ignacio not sent to his death?
What's in it for society to permit terrorists to live?
