Stopping at the Pennsylvania welcome center at the New York end of I-90.

It's eerie late at night...

At the foot of the "Pennsylvania Wineries" column, lies inebriated Santa:

But don't worry....

"You can't make a wrong turn in Pennsylvania."

IN THE COMMENTS: Palladian yells: "FROSTY THE SNOWMAN NOT SANTA." Oh, yeah! Good point. Ha ha. I need to get my American iconography straight.

Quick! Move him into the freezer!

Frosty isn't inebriated.

He just garroted himself with that electrical cord after listening to Bob Dylan's Christmas album.

Hey, that's ten miles down the Thruway from where I live! Next time through you should stop in the quaint little village of Westfield, NY, rather than at a creepy rest stop.

Eerie, or Erie, Pennsylvania?

Did anyone go missing in the area of that rest stop.

That photo of the guy leaving the men's room has all the hallmarks of an America's Most Wanted segment.

Frosty's looking a little Schlapp. So why is his nose still erect?

Hey, careful there. I think I just got that in the mail. Haven't opened it yet though.

There are surprisingly few hours in the middle of the night, if you get up at say 1am and start working on something.

Does a senator's tapping foot welcome you to PA in the stalls of that men's room?

Jason (the commenter) said...

chickenlittle, maybe you should listen to it from the safety of a padded room?

Oh my God, I just listened to some of the samples from that album over at Amazon and I am laughing my ass off. It kind of sounds like the Eels, but bad. Hysterically bad. I see the appeal. It's like the Star Wars Christmas Special.

The lighting was eerie but that was the cleanest rest stop on the entire trip.

The scuzziest was near Gary, Indiana.

Meade, that rest stop is clean because it's brand new. Went up about a year ago.

I see that Pennsylvania has a new slogan, "You can't make a wrong turn in Pennsylvania". The previous two were real winners. First was "You have a friend in Pennsylvania" commissioned after a consultant study found the state dead last in perceived friendliness. Then came "America starts here" (Please note the tense). I saw the sign entering from several different states, each of which i had previously believed to be part of America.

My adopted state of Virginia has had the same simple slogan for a long time: "Virginia is for Lovers". That's a welcome!

That may be, but only Pennsylvania has Intercourse.

It's true, you cannot make a wrong turn in Pennsylvania. I suppose the nuptials nixed your potential cross-country commenter meet-up extravaganza road trip last summer. But I'm still pulling for a stop by Philadelphia. Next year? Is that Google map still in existence?

Do you know why you can't make a wrong turn in Pennsylvania?

It's because the [deleted] Pennsylvania Turnpike doesn't have any exits. It's seriously like you go from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh with about three exits. Heaven help you if you miss your turn and are low on gas... (ask me how I know...)

"you can't make a wrong turn in Pennsylvania"? I will try and remember that for the next time a cop stops me.

Looks like a Hopper "Night Hawks" kind of night.

I live in Virginia too, but honestly -- who can hear that slogan and not think of Loving v. Virginia? Or is this just one more way lawschool has poisoned my mind?

And they don't last as long because they're wee hours.

Virginia has closed its non-Welcome Center rest areas to save money. The ramps are blocked so you can't even pee in the corner.
