"The souks of Aleppo, a maze of vaulted passageways with shops that sell everything from foods to fabrics, perfumes, spices and artisan souvenirs..."

"... are a tactical prize for the combatants. They lie beneath the city's towering citadel where activists say regime troops and snipers have taken up positions."
Ahmad al-Halabi, an activist based in Aleppo, said residents were struggling to control the blaze with a limited number of fire extinguishers and low water supply: "It's a disaster. The fire is threatening to spread to remaining shops," he said. "It is a very difficult and tragic situation there."

In the dispora of Christian Arabs following the 1948 Arab-Israeli War many Syrian Christians moved to the city Jacksonville, Florida. My family has gone to school, lived and prospered with them for several generations now. The professional 11X surfing champion of the world Kelly Slater from Cocoa Beach, Florida is of Syrian descent. That there be resolution soon for the liberty and peace of Syria.

Is it me or does it seem like the Islamic crazies are only good at destroying everything?

I daresay it's not just you. I'm sure they'd burn Jerusalem or DC with equal aplomb if they had the chance, especially if they had something to gain.

"Destroy, you mean?" John Falkayn said. "Oh merciful Christ, no. The records, the mementos -- half our past is in there."

"Your whole flinking future is out here," Chee snapped.

No easy choices for the Syrian people. It's only going to end one way -- the losing side and their families fleeing the reprisal squads.

The Aleppo souk, the Shi'ite shrines in Najaf, the Sufi libraries in Timbuktu -- between them the Ba'athist bitter-enders and Salafist true believers appear as willing to devour their own countries as they are to lash out at the West.

After the 2 trillion, 45 thousand casualty failure of Bush and the Neocons to invade, occupy, democratize and "nation-build" in two wars we basically lost?

After the following failure of the Obama "Arab Spring"??

It's time to distance ourselves a bit..or at least not be seen as the great hated Meddler that all Muslim nation problems can be blamed on.
