After Beyonce's publicists asks Buzzfeed to remove some unflattering photographs of her (from her Super Bowl show)...

... Buzzfeed publishes the email, and the photos become a meme. Why don't publicists get the internet? What the publicist wrote:
"I am certain you will be able to find some better photos. The worst are #5, 6, 10, 11, 12, 19 and 22."
What the internet heard: I am certain you will be able to photoshop these photos. May I recommend #5, 6, 10, 11, 12, 19 and 22.

ADDED: The Daily Mail link in the post doesn't work anymore. Here's Buzzfeed's original article, including the email and unflattering photos, but not the Photoshops. Google beyonce photoshop if you want to see some of them.

Because she's Beyonce. She's a big star. She's married to Jay-Z. She partied with President Zero. They should take care of her.

Don't you know who she is!!?!?!?!?!?!

I don't know why publicists don't get the internet.

Awful, awful, ugly stupid woman.

Please, NFL, stop having halftime shows!

What's the theme today. The public's worship of stupidity and ugliness?

We apparently have a lot of young women who should consider taking a dive off the GWB.

Cody Jarrett said...

I wouldn't call Beyonce ugly or stupid. I'm not a fan of her music at all, but she ain't ugly.

The funniest part is that apparently she's' in charge in the bedroom, and her game is tying up Jay-Z for some dom dom fun.

Yeah...I wanna hear Jay-Z thug rap that one.

I was amused by the blurb I read on MSN or something referring to "glowing reviews" or "universal adulation" for her halftime performance. Not out here in the Districts, but I'm sure that the Capitol thought it was great!

Reminds me of the White House saying the photo of Obama shooting shouldn't be photoshopped.

Hey Barack and Beyonce: As if.

The strawman called. He wants to know who said Beyonce is ugly or stupid?

I did. She's both.

Ann Althouse said...

Oh, I see now. I skip some comments!

Just to be clear: My "stupid" tag refers to the publicist. And the ugly photos are funny precisely because she is pretty.

That combination of the Las Vegas showgirl revue, combined with the Go Grrl! standard bullshit was some of the most braindead trash I've seen in years.

Or...maybe it's a publicity ploy. Now I've seen pictures of her. Don't recall if I ever did before.
(Don't need to ever again.)

Time for some real talk, ST. Beyonce is obviously very talented and hard working. [She's been dancing since she was a child]. You just don't get to where Beyonce is without talent above everyone else around you. Tell me when you look at that booty and those thighs you wouldn't want to rock her world. C'mon.

She's seems to be a happily married mother and successful businesswoman. Why all the hate?

Cody Jarrett said...

Ann? I was replying to ST, who said "Awful, awful, ugly stupid woman."

Ann Althouse said...

Oh, I see now. I skip some comments! Sorry CEO-MMP!

There. I fixed it for you.

Shouting Thomas said...

No hate. Wouldn't pay to see her act, and I'd go a long way out of my way to avoid it.

If you want to pay for her act, go ahead.

There's lots of crap out there that I won't pay to see.

So, she's a good woman. What's that got to do with the fact that her act is braindead PC crap?

I got plenty of that bullshit back when I worked in offices. Why would I pay for it?

I missed the halftime show last Sunday but I'm looking at the linked photos. My opinion should count as much as anyone's, I believe.

The photos make her look masculine, which doesn't square with the adjective "pretty," Althouse. Or maybe it does for you.

Obviously, some (like garage), prefer their women meaty, beaty, big, and beyoncy and there's nothing wrong with that either. Why all the ruckus about difference of opinion? I'm more interested in the meanings of words and how some try to change them.

When I was in undergrad school, on a very snowy day, some of the troops were engaged in the congenial pastime of pelting incoming cars with incoming snowballs. When one authoritarian type took offense and actually was dumb enough to get out of his car to upbraid the miscreants, pretty much the same thing ensued.

Forbidden fruit and all.

A professional dancer, at 5'6' 125lbs, is considered "big"?

Imagine a big beefy woman in that outfit.
If she wasn't in shape that outfit would sure show it. As it is it's clearly not all that flattering even to an athlete. Which is what she is. Dancing like that is physically demanding.

I'm with Garage.

But the internet is Democracy Whiskey Sexy in action.

Does her publicist think it's 1988?

From an NMATV video: "It's called the 'Streisand Effect', named for another over-rated singer...."

Shouting Thomas said...

I'll admit, I'm incredibly old fashioned.

I like music. I don't want musicians to dance, gyrate and prove how athletic they are. I want them to stand there and play and sing.

It works better that way. Lots better.

I sometimes work as a accompanist for musicals. The things I do to make a living!

Damn!!! The internet has such a great sense of humor. Those photoshops are hilarious.

I really like the one of her going eeeeewwww at the fat nerd getting ready to make out with whoever that is in the commercial. As you can see, I'm not very connected with pop culture since I have no idea who they are.

The public figures, and that means you too Obama, just haven't figured it out. "Don't photoshop this!!" :is a challenge and there are thousands of talented people out there ready to take up the gauntlet.

Love it!!!

Cody Jarrett said...

Or, by saying "don't photoshop it" as the White House did, they're knowingly inviting ridiculous photoshops which serve to further marginalize the whole event.

I don't think that was Beyonce's publicists plan though.

I thought folks in the entertainment industry believed that there is no such thing as bad publicity. Well, she got publicity.

Maybe it's true what they say about people living together.

Is she starting to look like Jay Z?

Jay-Z, not "a looker".

Garage: people aren't reacting to metrics like that--they're getting visual cues. Why else the comparisons to bodybuilders? FTR, I believe the proper description is a "rockin' bod" --like Madonna and Lady Gaga--but some insist on turning that into "pretty."

Remember Pretty Thing? I'm not sure what Willie Dixon had in mind with the lyrics, but Bo Diddley version wasn't about nut-crushing thighs and "Take that, mitches!"

Or was it?

@garage: Sometimes, I forget what a young spring chicken you are, unable to grasp cultural reference riffs: link.

She's much more appropriate for the half time show than Taylor Swift. I don't know anything about her music, but her health and athleticism are jolting. Her progeny will be sure to make the football team.

William said...

Edith Piaf would be another poor choice for the Superbowl Halftime Show.

pm317 said...

She may be pretty but ugly is what she does with it in the photos (made pretty ugly) and in life (she tweeted 'take that Mitches' after the election).

Petunia said...

She's gone a long way on hard work, self-promotion, photoshop, trying to look whiter than she is, and marginal talent. But her massive ego, political nastiness, and lack of intelligence (ever heard her interviewed?) make her a prime target for stuff like this.

She and her publicist should have expected nothing less for attempting to control the images of her Super Bowl performance.

The ghost of James Brown is on line one, ST.

As they say 'the link is farked' so I'm missing all the pics.

1) I don't find her particularly attractive OR talented.

2) The original picture captions that rip of her for being 'fierce' are because she put out an album years back called 'I am...SASHA FIERCE!'

What a load of crap.

That's one advantage of getting older and a little wiser: knowing that the entertainment industry - both media and politics - are essentially run on 'spin' and bullshiat.

Get back to me when one of the death metal bands actually does something evil.

Nichevo said...

She may have great tits and ass but, a) the outfits actually don't let me judge that well and b) if not an actual butterface, hers is no more than pleasant at best. The blondish hair is silly and unattractive. She seems to have a speech impediment. I'm not even aware of her politics. I just didn't enjoy her singing that much, at last at the SB.

MathMom said...

I just watched the SB show. Looks like it a stripper show. So, if she doesn't like unflattering pictures of her crotch, perhaps she shouldn't flash it at everyone, up close and personal.

Her show is looking like Michael Jackson's, as he started grabbing himself all the time.

Makes me miss The Supremes.
