"Anyone who saw Reid would say that he looked like he had been beaten up by a guy with a hard left, maybe using brass knuckles..."

"When a guy shows up at a Las Vegas emergency room on New Year’s Day with severe facial injuries and broken ribs, and gives as an explanation the functional equivalent of 'I walked into a doorknob,' it isn’t hard to guess that he ran afoul of mobsters. Yet the national press has studiously averted its eyes from Reid’s condition, and has refused to investigate the cause of his injuries. To my knowledge, every Washington reporter has at least pretended to believe Reid’s story, and none, as far as I can tell, has inquired further."

Writes John Hinderaker, who inquires further.
What happened to Reid is not just a matter of curiosity. Everyone knows that the Reid family has gotten rich, even though Reid has spent his entire career as a public employee. It is known that a considerable part of his fortune came from being cut in on sweetheart Las Vegas land deals that included at least one person associated with organized crime as a principal....

I would like to think that no organized crime would think it could get away with beating up the ranking Senate Democrat.

OTOH, maybe they know he won't go after them. They know why it was done and also know that Reid doesn't want the broader public to know why it was done. Seems like a good movie plot: The Secret Service or FBI investigates "an accident" and uncovers a secret world of corrupt politicians and mobsters...

That is why I think it was a Pimp: Pimps are more likely to wildcat.

Now, if injuries befall Reid's family and friends, THEN we know Organized Crime is making a point to Mister Reid.

On a side-note: while Organized Crime is involved in the prostitution of women I believe they don't cross the line to small boys.

Thus: Pimp.

The missing word between "crime" and "would" is because I was mulling over the right word. "unit" seems like it might mean a law enforcement group that targets organized crime, "syndicate" seemed trite.

I ended up forgetting about the gap when my oldest daughter came down stairs and I made her some breakfast. She also wanted to chat about if we should fly out to Seattle to visit the University of Washington or not. She would like to make the trip but thinks attending college 3,000 miles away might be a bit much.

Anyway, after all of that, I forgot about the missing word. I think I would go with "no criminal organization"

It's comment clutter and it's detrimental to substantive conversation. I can't police all of it, but when it appears early on and looks like it's going to derail, I have a mind to delete it. I don't like to delete, which is why I put in the explanation.

"I read the purportedly invalid comment before it was deleted and I took it to be an accusation that you troll your own blog. That's a valid criticism, IMHO, although I can see how it must sting."

Really? How do you "see" that? If a comment had significant power, even as a criticism of me, I wouldn't take it out. I'm taking out de-railing lack of substance and clutter. The idea that I would use my power to delete to deal with comments that "sting" me is are real misunderstanding of how my feelings work.

"Is that why you scrubbed the record so others cannot judge for themselves?"

As noted, obviously not.

Maybe that is at Reid's request: there is nothing about the man that says he wouldn't be into necrophilia.

Has any reporter even thought to ask Reid whether he's planning to sue the manufacturer of the exercise equipment? Any machine that could cause such serious injuries when used as directed is obviously horribly unsafe and should be taken off the market. It seems to me Reid would have a moral obligation to sue - if, of course, he's telling the truth about what happened. Has he even told us what brand it is, so we can avoid it? Exercise machines can be used by people of all abilities but a couple of things come to mind:

1. These machines may be used by old and weak people but are strong enough to stand use by really strong people.

2. Reid is rich--he would not own some off-brand piece of crap equipment. Top-line stuff is durable.

OTOH

3. There are devices where you put your foot in one end and pull the other end with your hand. These seem like an accident waiting to happen. If your foot slips out of the handle, the end will whack you in the face. This does not explain the cracked ribs though.

Ann trolls the easy ground on the right. She knows very well that if there is a nefarious story behind Reid's injuries, reporters, no matter their political preferences, would uncover it. It would be the story of the year and would be career defining investigative journalism.

I see. 'Once bitten, twice [deleted]' is just a stupid leftwing troll making the usual dishonest leftwing arguments.

Examples of dishonesty:

1. Lumping together actual clowns like 'Laslo Spatula' with politicians he prefers to think of as 'clowns' because he disagrees with their policy positions (Cruz, Bachmann, Palin).

2. Pretending that Bachmann and Palin "are" right now "taken as serious presidential contenders in the Republican party". (At least he didn't mention Gingrich or Buchanan.)

3. Alleging that Ann "knows" that the press would gladly uncover any nefarious Reid activities, without bothering to answer my question: have they even bothered to ask him whether he's suing the manufacturer? If not, are they too stupid to think of such questions, or too 'respectful' to even want to know the truth about a Democrat. I don't know whether Ann "knows" that they would gladly dig up dirt on Reid, but I don't know any such thing. I'm old enough to remember what "spiking" a story means, and how some very juicy stories were in fact spiked and had to be reported by the likes of the National Inquirer.

It's always amusing when an obvious troll accuses others of trolling - what I like to think of as 'projectile commenting'.

I've seen Reid's eye (didn't know about the ribs that went with it until now) and didn't really care to pay attention. I thought the background joking about a mob message was a little silly. Until now. Because it's absolutely true--if he's never going to see out of his right eye again, then he should sue. That doesn't strike me as a frivolous lawsuit.

Those corrupted by Power cannot help but degrade others; many choose to also degrade themselves, in private, as perhaps a form of penance.

Example: putting a cigar in a young employee's genitalia would be considered by most to be an act of degradation through abuse of Power.

Harry Reid's hidden desire to have people urinate on him shows the subconscious need to degrade himself in his self-awareness of his corruption.

With this in mind, I bet there is an entire 'Golden Shower' subset in the Halls of Congress. An enterprising reporter might want to ask some prostitutes some questions. Perhaps.

An honest commenter would have replied to my points without trying to evade them. 'Once bitten, twice [stupid]' said the named politicians "are" taken seriously, and now insists that that's OK because they were once taken seriously. He makes sure not to mention that in a democracy anyone who can win votes has to be taken seriously, even when they are as stupid and evil as (e.g.) Obama, both Clintons, and of course Reid, none of them fringe candidates. Worst of all, he fails to respond to my main point, that it is deeply dishonest to lump together as "clowns" literal clowns like 'Laslo Spatula' and metaphorical clowns like various politicians. Nor does he apologize for lumping together all the "right-wing conservatives" who comment here with 'Laslo Spatula' who seems to be an apolitical clown.

Bruce Hayden said...

Has any reporter even thought to ask Reid whether he's planning to sue the manufacturer of the exercise equipment?

A reminder that Reid's four sons and one son-in-law are all attorneys in NV. And, yes, at least some of them make their money selling influence and the like. The one I knew was extremely well liked around the office. I liked him, and we would joke about having so many lawyers in our families.

My partner remembers the Reid family visiting them when she was growing up. Her Roman Catholic family were honorary Mormons from the size of their family living in a part of Las Vegas with a large Mormon contingent. The Reid kids were a little younger, but not that much. This was, of course, before Reid senior was elected to the Senate. She also knows him a bit from his earlier fund raisers.

Which gets to my second point here, that he is apparently tight with trial lawyers. Last year, "patent reform", that would have provided attorneys' fees to parties who were alleged to infringe, but win at trial (i.e. "losing plaintiff pays") was defeated at the last minute, and that defeat was apparently primarily at the hands of Harry Reid. It was horrible legislation, being pushed by big high tech infringers like Google, Microsoft, Apple, etc. (but esp. Google). It felt like the sort of forces behind it that we had fought (and lost to) in the fight for the AIA (America (Dis)Invents Act). We were getting no traction in Congress, until, all of a sudden, the legislation was dead, with evidence of Reid's involvement all over it. And why would the trial lawyers want that? Because it would have made contingency fee patent infringement litigation far, far, harder, if not close to impossible.

Bruce Hayden said...

Was it mafia? Don't know. I do know that they have been around Vegas for, like, ever. But, the Nevada Gaming Commission was and continues to be somewhat successful in keeping them out of management and ownership of casinos. Not completely - I always thought that it was interesting that Steve Wynn, with well known mafia ties, could get a gaming license (apparently through his wife?), but Donald Trump could not. Still, the firm I was with in NV had one of the top gaming practices in the country, and Nevada seemed cleaner than almost anywhere else. (I worked with them writing patent applications on games and casino related inventions).

My partner grew up in Vegas through the 1960s and 1970s. She grew up knowing of, and often even having met, the major figures at the time there. So, on CSI, she inevitably knows who or what underlays the plots there (where the names and facts have been changed a bit). Even dated some of the mafia kids. But, mostly, that is gone. Still, when she says that she knows people who can have your knees broken, or plant you in an unmarked grave in the desert there, I find her credible. They just don't have as much power as they used to.

What I do find credible is that organized labor was involved. Vegas is highly unionized (Reno apparently less so). And, they were always Reid's biggest backers (even more than the trial attorneys). In his last election, he was able to pull out a victory by getting all of the casinos and their unions together on his side (apparently the casinos usually tend to split ideologically, and are often at odds with their unions, but Sharon Angle had pissed them all off). My partner's father and first husband were both in unions there, and it was just the way that it was. Pretty much everyone you meet working in the casinos, all of the workers building the casinos, etc. are all union members. And, yes, I suspect that whatever remains of the mafia is more involved in the unions there than in ownership or management of the casinos.

@ the Godfather - You forgot Slow Joe! And Bernie Sanders is a name bandied about for 2016. Al Sharpton, and Dennis Kucinich!

Maybe Mitt was training for his Holyfield bout and sparred with Dirty Harry and beat the bejeezus out of him. That is what I like to think happened.

""Anyone who saw Reid would say that he looked like he had been beaten up by a guy with a hard left, maybe using brass knuckles...it isn’t hard to guess that he ran afoul of mobsters.

Indeed. Let's give credit where credit is due.

The parallels are pretty striking...

It was not reported , but Reid was testing a new rubber band exercise machine called the catapult. Apparently he stationed himself on the wrong side of the machine.

Well, I do know something about physics: a snapping band can't fling things. When the band snapped Reid certainly could have fallen, but he couldn't have been flung into anything with any force other than his own weight. Durbin either misunderstood what he was told, or he was told something false.

Harry Reid is old. A fall could be very bad for him, especially one that is totally unexpected. I didn't think the story is so implausible that mobster roughing up a sitting Senator is more likely. Quite the other way around actually.

Whether or not someone roughed up Reid, perhaps the most important thing is that we have reached a point where we cannot simply dismiss out of hand the implausible notion that one of the United States' wealthiest and most powerful politicians has been roughed up by mobsters.

It has come to this. The Senate Democratic leader, one of the most powerful men in Washington, has serious facial bruises and when someone suggests he ran afoul of mobsters we cannot dismiss that as absurd.

Say this was 'pub Senator with questionable associates. What are the odds that both the FTC and FDA would already have opened an investigation? Injuries like that are potentially life threatening. "We have to do it for the children!" Toys have been banned for less. Imagine the counter-suit where the manufacturer then gets to depose Mr. Reid under oath. Good fun. Where's my popcorn?
