Susan Sarandon trashes Hillary Clinton.

"I think that she's isolated. I don't think she's... a victim — playing this female part — I don't think she is. She's been connected to power for a very long time, and when she was on the board of Walmart for 9 years, she did nothing to raise that wage or stand by women and all the things she could have done. And I think that her name recognition is helping her quite a bit in the South, but I don't think that she's been there, like Sanders has, getting arrested, all through his life standing up for rights...."

If I may be permitted to tread upon the sacred ground that is Laslo's:

Right now, the most powerful man in American politics is the head of the FBI, James Comey. If Comey really wants to, he can single-handedly sink Hillary's chances of getting elected by publicly recommending inditing Hillary, or, resigning in protest. Now, Comey is by all accounts a square shooter, but if he isn't:

HRC: "Okay Jim, I've wired the 20 mil from the Clinton Foundation to the Swiss Bank account just like you wanted."

JC: "And?...."

HRC: "Bill's working on finding the girls, Jim. Be patient."

JC: "Patience, my ass! I want a chick from every color of the rainbow. Black, white, asian, latino. And every single damn one a 10! A 10, capiche? I ain't gettin' any younger & I want Li'l Willie here to go out with a bang, you know what I mean."

HRC: "Yes, Jim, sadly I do."

JC: "You know what I really want, Hil? A GREEN chick, just like on Star Trek!"

HRC: "Jim, that's fiction. There are no Orion dancing girls in the real world."

JC: "Whoa, whoa! OVAL OFFICE! OVAL OFFICE! Eyes on the prize, Hil!"

HRC: "Okay, Jim, I see what I can do."

HRC: "Sid, what's the name of that real looker who's in the volunteer phone pool?"

SB: "You mean Vanessa?"

HRC: "Yeah, yeah, Vanessa. Go get her, Sid. I'm gonna draw a bath. And send David down to the CVS for some green food coloring. LOTS of it!"

No, like apples and oranges, you're comparing pears and hourglasses.

BTW Curtiss, I recall your distinct avatar from years ago. Is this your first comment in a while?

She's looked really really good her whole life...in fact you could say she's made a career out of it.

Unfortunately, she's emotionally immature, and largely ignorant, but thinks she's a sage.

As Sanders fans, these names speak volumes.

"Bernie Sanders, getting arrested all through his life..."

Really? Maybe he should have been, but I don't think this is anywhere close to true. Bernie's last arrest was in the early '60's I think, when he was involved with CORE and SNCC, both pretty radical groups. And if getting arrested is the true test, HRC may make the list yet.

But refreshing to see a Hollywood radical chic-let member of the nomenklatura go dialectical on HRC.

African Americans. But only because their other choice is worse in their eyes. The African-Americans are not in revolt against the Democratic establishment yet, but they will be.

Not that I especially want to defend Hillary Clinton, but the civil rights struggle in the south had already achieved its major victories while she was still a teenager at Wellesley. Most people who supported civil rights never got arrested, and I don't think the mere lack of an arrest record should be used as an indication that someone was insincere.

Lena Dunham remains steadfast in Hillary's support so who cares what Susan Sarandon thinks........Jennifer Lawrence has remained silent on her choice. She's probably reading up on all the issues before she weighs in. She realizes how important her endorsement is and wants to be fully informed. That's why her endorsement is so important. She's not like those other Hollywood stars who are always shooting from the lip. I thought it was beautiful and courageous the way she took her sister's place in the Hunger Games. She's sure to make the right choice.

The Democratic National Convention is going to be something this year. Between Bernie probably owning the rank and file on the floor and the celebrities in the skyboxes, and Hillary's recent Maoist fashion sense, we can definitely call it Philly Commie-Con.

Loved her in Pretty Baby. It was an R rating in the late 70s. I'm pretty sure I saw it on HBO. Not sure where it can be seen legally now, unless they edit out nekkid Brooke Shields.

@Ambrose,

You should be irked at how Walmart rapes American workers.

Oh wise Gahrie, and you make these pronouncements on Sarandon's maturity and degree of knowledge from what greater degree wisdom? And does she think she's a sage because she dares open her mouth and speak about matters of the day? Doesn't this, too, make of you, a fool who thinks he's a sage? Doesn't this make of all us fools who think we're sages?

Terry,

I'm a working person who is concerned by and angry at the "Wal-Mart-ization" of American employment. Perhaps you're simply too advantaged to have any care for the plight of underpaid working Americans whose underpayment further enriches their already rich-beyond-imagining employers, or for what this trend portends for the American workforce, or for your own working future, or for America's economic future.

tim in vermont said...

The think about Wall Mart is that it provides a place for people of limited means to shop. If you shut down all the Wall Marts, you force those living in double wides and Heaven forfend! trailer parks to spend more on their every day necessities, effectively making them poorer. But I guess if you raise the price of everything, from labor to goods, the costs incurred will all somehow magically disappear and everybody will be richer!

I would be interested in an explanation of how that will work.

tim in vermont said...

If you really cared about low wages for the low skilled, you would be against mass immigration of low skilled workers. But the Republicans want them for the cheap labor and the Democrats want them for the votes.

I just think that if an employer says "I'll pay you X dollars per hour to work for me." It's my labor (not the State's) and I can sell it for what I want to.
Anyway, like all socialist plans, getting rid of Walmart would cost workers their jobs and guess what? The rich stockholders and upper management at Walmart would continue to do just fine. I guess you are privileged enough not to care about the workers, Robert Cook.

Wal-Mart is sending American jobs to foreign lands and the Democrats are bringing in foreign workers to do jobs in American lands.

I have no idea why this crazy Trump fellow is so popular.

Sounds like Sarandon will be voting for Trump.

The Cracker Emcee Refulgent said...

I'm not a Wal-Mart basher, though. I've seen the before and after of a Wal-Mart arriving in a small community and there is no question that the community was better off with the Wal-Mart. Few, if any, of the fabled Mom & Pops bit the dust and the disadvantaged of the community are much better served.

I'm also impressed by Wal-Mart's willingness to employ folks other businesses wouldn't touch with a ten-foot pole. Walk through a Wal-Mart at 6AM sometime, when the night stockers are still there, and see the grossly overweight, the elderly, the handicapped, and the woman with the face tattoos, at work. And they're not exactly under the lash. Cookie would claim they're being exploited but, the fact is, they're making the same wages as every other retail worker in town.

JCC said...

@ Robert Cook -

Walmart stores bring a well-researched double edged sword to local communities. They employ large numbers of people who otherwise might be unemployed, since their typical labor pool is in the entry-labor sub-set. They also bring low prices and, in effect, a pay raise to a very large population, by replacing small, high priced markets and driving down prices in those that survive. True, among those now newly employed rather than on the dole, they pay low wages with minimal (but real) benefits, shoving some of the health care costs back on local government, but were these same employees not employed at all in the absence of Walmart, local government would presumably absorb all of their healthcare costs, for instance. Walmart does offer a career path for some smaller group who persevere, and more realistically, an income for those willing to work more than one job or for households with more than one wage-earner.

Labor costs are not something that a corporation like Walmart will simply write off against the bottom line. Increase labor costs and you will directly and immediately see an increase in prices, which will directly impact the buying public, which tends to be the lower income brackets. It's like a gasoline tax. It has a disparate effect on low wage earners, and will (or should but won't) get Bernie Sanders on your ass. It's a regressive tax, in other words.

In addition, labor costs in a capitalist market will seek their own level. Walmart's business model is predicated on low prices and volume, aimed at a lower income demographic. They are not going to raise salaries past some point and screw that model up. I think you and Susan are just out of luck here. More people benefit from this model (via low prices) than suffer (in your view) from the low wages. Just because Walmart (the corporate entity) has been successful in this model doesn't mean they intend to share their largess with the first tier workers, anymore than McDonald's plans to pay the guy behind the counter $15 an hour. They have no intention of doing that, and if forced to do so, will automate, or move to another jurisdiction.

rcommal said...

JCC: How interesting, your use of, your choice to use, this: "first tier."
